TITLE: Modeling the Solar Systems Motions -- The Orrery

SYNOPSIS:

Orreries are clockwork, mechanical devices made to model the motions of solar system bodies. The modern era of orreries began in the early 18th century and these marvelous machines have now evolved into countless forms, some extraordinarily complex and beautiful. Although mostly unknown to the public, overwhelming numbers of these models now exist in many sizes and forms with valuable antiques hundreds of years old and modern examples for sale at many price points.

This unusual presentation reviews their origin, history, usefulness, designs and functions with many stunning majestic and exquisite examples -– antique through modern. Want one? Come and learn. The picturesque presentation concludes with two modern and unique designs –- one once used at the University of Florida and now very rare, and an unconventional orrery program developed many years ago by a University of Florida professor.
